Last month, Fox introduced BitBop.com, a service that streams live TV to BlackBerry smartphones, or lets users download shows for later play, for $9.99 a month. NBC also offers a smartphone streaming service, NBC2Go, through Flo TV. For $14.99 a month, owners of several smartphone models serviced by AT&T and Verizon can stream NBC shows on demand.

With its media company parents breathing down its neck to turn a profit, the online video site Hulu announced a subscription service today that charges $9.99 a month for access to older episodes of popular television shows. The more recent episodes of the shows will remain free…
…In a post on the Hulu blog, CEO Jason Kilar wrote that the company was offering “a fair price” that would cater to customers accessing their favorite shows.
…The new site is initially available by preview invitation only on computers, Apple’s iPad and iPhones and certain Samsung Blu-ray players and TVs. It’s coming to Sony’s PlayStation 3 and some of its TVs and Blu-ray players, and there are plans to launch on Microsoft Corp.’s Xbox early next year.
…Vendors are still trying to figure this out but there’s undeniable interest in the space. Earlier this month, for instance, Fox Interactive Media announced a move into mobile video with an on-demand service called Bitbop that will allow Blackberry users to watch TV shows and movies on their devices.

Bitbop, Fox Mobile’s subscription-based TV program showcase, has made its debut on Research in Motion’s BlackBerry this week and is now preparing to begin beta tests on Google’s Android system. The beta will launch in two weeks, Joe Bilman, Fox Mobile’s EVP, Global Products, told paidContent in an interview. In addition, Bitbop is also working on an international expansion as well. This fall, the mobile VOD service, which costs U.S. subs $9.99 a month to stream over 100 popular TV programs, will be available in Germany. In contrast to the U.S., at least right now, the German Bitbop will allow viewing on PCs in addition to mobile.
Bilman declined to discuss why it isn’t yet available on the PC in the U.S., but it probably has to do with the different licensing deals for TV programming in the U.S. Aside from its international goals, Bitbop is also looking to eventually create an app for Apple’s iPhone and iPad. But unlike the rest of the of world, Bitbop isn’t rushing to knock down Apple’s door to the iTunes App Store.
Bitbop’s argument is that apps for the iPhone have reached a saturation level, where it’s harder and harder for new services to break in. The BlackBerry, on the other hand, has largely been ignored as a vehicle for entertainment while it still positions itself mainly as a tool for business professionals. In Bilman’s view, those individuals like to watch videos as well, so why not carve out a niche there as it seeks to build its name? Read the article

From Hollywood Rewired
Introducing the Digital Power 50 for 2010
BY ANDREW WALLENSTEIN
Power doesn’t come easily in the digital content world.
Despite the buzz about the iPad or Foursquare, audiences and revenues generated by programming on PCs or wireless devices is still a pittance compared with that on such established mediums as film and TV. But measured by the more intangible metric of influence, even the slightest innovation can portend big changes to come in the evolving media business.
Which makes the accomplishments of the 50 men and women highlighted in The Hollywood Reporter’s third annual Digital Power issue worth noting. Read the article.
